Network Cable Installer ECS Gold Card: Experienced Worker Assessment

Are you an experienced network cable installer and are looking for an ECS Gold Card? The Experienced Worker Assessment could be the solution for you.

Network Cable Installer ECS Gold Card: Experienced Worker Assessment

The Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) Gold Card for Network Cable Installers is a highly regarded credential in the UK, signifying professional competence in network infrastructure installation. For experienced network cable installer engineers who lack formal qualifications but possess substantial on-the-job expertise, the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA is the perfect solution. Depending on their chosen pathway, experienced engineers must complete one or both practical tasks that offer a path to achieving this certification. Below is an overview of the EWA process, its requirements, and what candidates can expect.

Pathways to Certification

The Experienced Worker Assessment evaluates an engineer's competency in installing, commissioning, and maintaining copper and fibre-structured cabling systems. Depending on their expertise, candidates can choose one of the following pathways:

PathwayRequirements
Copper Pathway- Copper multiple-choice questions test
- Copper practical test
Fibre Pathway- Fibre multiple-choice questions test
- Fibre practical test
Copper & Fibre Pathway- Copper and Fibre multiple-choice questions tests
- Copper and Fibre practical tests

Each pathway ensures that engineers are assessed on the specific skills relevant to their area of focus.

Practical Observations with Questioning

Depending on their chosen pathway, experienced engineers must complete one or both practical tasks. These tasks are designed to test real-world skills under timed conditions.

Key Details of the Practical Assessment

  • Duration: Both tasks can take a maximum of 7 hours (2 hours for copper, 5 hours for fibre).
  • Tasks:
    1. Copper Cable Installation, Termination, and Testing:
      • Lay and loom cables into a cabinet.
      • Install containment using a spirit level.
      • Terminate copper cables (UTP/FTP), including:
        • One UTP and one FTP outlet at low level.
        • Six UTP panel-to-panel links.
    2. Fibre Optic Cable Installation, Termination, and Testing:
      • Lay and loom cables into a cabinet.
      • Install containment using a spirit level.
      • Terminate fibre optic cables, including:
        • One panel-to-panel link with four spliced fibres.
        • Four direct-terminated fibres.

If the candidate is pursuing dual certification in copper and fibre, both tasks must be completed on the same day.
